Add Bone Meal to Begonia Tubers

Begonia Flowers

Add bone meal or fish meal to your begonia tubers, says National Garden Club's Ask Flora.

Dear Flora,

Last spring I bought several pots of tuberous begonias and transplanted them into a window box on the east side of my house. They produced some blooms but were not as vigorous or abundant as I had expected. Do you have any suggestions for my plants this spring?

National Garden Club’s “Ask Flora” Answers…

Early morning sun is ideal for tuberous begonias, so your location is fine. However, perhaps the soil in the window box was not sufficiently rich and/or not kept moist enough.

Use a quality potting mix from the nursery and, when planting, add a bit of fish meal or bone meal into the planting hole. Water when the soil surface is dry, and keep the soil damp, but not soggy. Poke a finger deep into the soil to test. Fertilize every two weeks with a high P/low N fertilizer.
