Chocolate So Good, You’ll Never Know It’s Vegan

Mmmm. Chocolate. For most of us (read: Women), just the mention of chocolate puts us in an altered state.

What is better than a bite of sumptuous, richly decadent chocolate that melts to a smooth, buttery consistency in your mouth, delighting all your senses and leaving you craving more?

Well, according to Missionary Chocolates founder and chocolatier, Melissa M. Berry, ND, what would make that bite even better is if the chocolate were vegan-based. That’s right – non-dairy, gluten-free chocolates, no animal products allowed. “We’ve always been ‘foodies’ in my family, my mom has lent me her vegan heritage for inspiration, and it’s culminated into “Missionary Chocolates,” my little home-based business that I can barely keep up with!”

While some may have been daunted at tinkering with what some consider the Nectar of the Gods, Melissa persevered. What she created is nothing short of a miracle – gourmet chocolate that confirmed vegans and vegetarians can eat without guilt and with a clean conscience. “I make the very best non-dairy chocolate truffles that I’ve ever had, and I’m definitely a picky truffle eater,” she said.
But Missionary Chocolates is not just for vegans. If you’ve got a dairy or gluten allergy, eating chocolate confections is taboo. But at this Portland, OR, confectioinary, you can stuff your face–confident you won’t live to regret your transgression.
If you just love chocolate, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how nicely one of Melissa’s handmade truffles feels in your mouth, excites your taste buds and makes your tongue, throat and stomach very, very happy.

Melissa’s company has only been in business a year and is dedicated to using locally grown, organic and fair-trade ingredients in her chocolates. Each truffle is handmade in her the company’s kitchens, some requiring hours of preparation time to get the right consistency and flavor.

You might think vegan chocolate would have its limits in flavors, but Missionary Chocolates has traditional (Dark Chocolate Delights) to clever (Sweet Raspberry Hearts) to spicy (Cinnamon Chipotle) confections – yum!

The cost of these unusual delicacies is market rate for a gourmet treat – $3.50 for one (oh, come on, it’s worth it) to $15.00 for four and nine for $30.00. Taste for yourself at the Energy Trust Better Living Show or Melissa will ship her non-animal-based confections anywhere in the U.S.
