Dendrobium Orchids: Affordable and Easy to Grow

by Lori Feldman on June 9, 2008

Dendrobium orchids are some of the most common orchid species on the American market today. Once, Dendrobium orchids were only grown and collected by wealthy individuals. Times have changed and now the once elusive Dendrobiums can be found in florist shops and upscale nurseries as well as in home improvement stores and warehouse clubs.

The wide availability of Dendrobiums has caused their prices to drop significantly, but this actually a double-edged sword. For some, Dendrobiums at affordable prices are wonderful because the formerly high-priced Dendrobium plants can now be availed of by everyone. Dendrobiums are very easy to grow orchids and because they are now inexpensive, people who have always wanted to grow orchids but couldn’t afford to in the past are now able to.

Dendrobium orchids come in varying colors, but the most common are the purple Dendrobiums and the white Dendrobiums. Some of the white Dendrobium species are completely white and others may have tinges of red, maroon or purple in them.

There are some white Dendrobiums with purple centers and white petals. The color combinations within the white flower range are incredible. There is also a variety of green Dendrobium orchids, although they do not have the true Kelly green color but more of a bright yellow-green instead.

Keep in mind that Dendrobiums are generally orchid plants that don’t require expensive care requirements as what many people once thought. And the fact that these plants are now inexpensive and somewhat easy to grow makes them very popular.
