When did fashion shows become earth friendly? Why would I want chickens in my garden? And how can my sofa become a heat source for my home?
These questions and other green living mysteries will be explained at this year’s Portland Energy Trust Better Living Show, running March 26 – 28, 2010.
This Show is not your run-of-the-mill home and garden show. It’s a three-day lifestyle festival which centers on homes and gardens but also includes music, fashion, cooking and social justice – but not necessarily in that order.
Sustainable Clothing Fashion Shows
SEMPER Fashion is Portland’s oldest and most respected fashion show production company. They have joined forces with Sidlab Haircouture and Rumours Day Spa to offer four 20-minute fashion shows during the Better Living Show. These fashion shows will showcase earth-friendly and beautiful fashions made from materials such as bamboo and organic cotton.
The fashion show is free of charge for the public, but the “backstage” action could prove to be the most interesting part of the day. As the models are “Getting Runway-Ready”, they will be visible to the public, so that we can view them receiving their eco-friendly makeup and hair care treatments.
Gardening with Chickens
One of the many interesting topics covered in the Better Living Show’s Seminar Series is Jordis Yost’s “Chicken Chat”. Jordis has a Master Gardener certificate from OSU and works for the OSU Extension service. Since 1990 Jordis and her husband have been gardening and raising chickens, and she’s ready to share her honestly acquired wisdom with us.
Jordis will share with us how easy chickens are to raise, how useful they can be in a garden, and how good those eggs can taste when chickens are allowed to be, well, just chickens. If Jordis’ expertise inspires you to begin a flock of your own, a visit to the Chicken Gardener or another on-site chicken-friendly vendor can set you up with the resources you need.
Passive Solar Energy Innovation
In layman’s terms, passive solar energy is the energy that is stored in an object when it is heated by the sun. The very thing that makes blacktop perilous for bare feet will turn your living room wall into a heat source–if your home is set up correctly.
Ray Pokorny will offer a presentation at the Clean Energy Pavilion and will explain to us how to use solar rocks, sofas and tables to keep your home warm. If you would like to follow up your passive solar education with some active planning, a visit to Ray’s Mr. Sun Solar’s booth, may give you some more concrete information.
Last year the Better Living Show hosted over 20,000 visitors and more than 300 vendors, so it’s an understatement to say that this post cannot begin to describe them all. Plan the weekend properly, and you’ll find out how sweaters, chickens and solar couches all fit together as pieces of an overall green life.
