I love to garden, although I don’t seem to have as much time these days for my summer pastime. But I do have a longstanding frustration for which I’ve not found an acceptable solution, until now. I’m talking about garden edging.
I think I’ve tried everything: stones, bricks, pavers, cutting a “V” and filling it with mulch, etc. No matter what I’ve done, weeds and grass still sneak into the crevices and infiltrate my tidy flower or vegetable beds. Up to now, I’ve simply sighed and gone to work pulling out the noxious invaders. But no more.
I’ve just learned about a new trick that will keep out those marauding weeds and grasses and keep my edges nice and neat: Kwik Kerb. I know, funny spelling. But there’s nothing funny about their serious solution to garden edging. KwikKerb is a permanent answer to the gardener’s question of “How can I keep my edges neat?”
Have you ever inspected your beds after a hard winter and marveled at how your once straight edges have somehow become catawampus? In areas where winter means freezing and thawing, by the time spring arrives, the hard work you put into your edging the year before may have been for naught. I’ve spent way more time than I’d like to think about resetting edges that should have remained intact … but didn’t.
According to Chad McMillen, owner of McMillen’s Kwik Kerb in western Pa., Kwik Kerb does what may seem impossible – give you more time. “With concrete edging, you are making your life easier. It’s that simple. No more edging machine or resetting your existing edging every year. You can just add your mulch in the spring and you’re done.” Sounds good to me – who doesn’t want more time?
If you’ve not already guessed, Kwik Kerb is concrete edging. But it’s not boring, and it’s not gray (unless that’s the color you prefer). Kwik Kerb offers a variety of stamping styles to create a one-of-kind look in your yard. Like the look of brick? How about slate tiles? They creates both and many other styles. Kwik Kerb also offers different heights for curbs, depending upon your needs. Curb shapes range from mower height, which is short enough for a mower to go over it, to high profile height, which, at seven inches, is great for dividing lanes and parking areas. They can even custom design a shape for you.
The great thing about Kwik Kerb is that their edging is designed not to shift, crack or deteriorate like other concrete edging you may be familiar with. Kwik Kerb includes special additives in the mix to allow for the natural expansion and contraction that occurs when concrete is exposed to the elements. This ensures your curbs are truly permanent. It’s this difference that Chad believes sets Kwik Kerb apart from its competition.
“Being up north, we have our wonderful “freeze/thaw” process in the winters that really hurts concrete. [Including these additives] is the thing that separates us from our competitors and, I believe, the most important detail in concrete edging.”
As if this wasn’t cool enough, they’ve added a new feature: lighting. Kwik Kerb now embeds lights into their curb designs, truly taking your home’s curb appeal from nice to absolutely amazing. The lights are easy to replace, too, should that need ever arise. By incorporating lights into your curbs, your home is the one that glows in the neighborhood!
Installation is easy – they lay out the flexible concrete forms around the area to be framed. Once the design is set, they get to work installing your new edging, which is often completed in one day. Do note that this is poured and stamped concrete – not pavers or bricks. Sometimes this distinction is misunderstood.
Chad does offer a few pointers if you’re considering adding concrete edging to your yard:
- If you’re talking with several companies, be sure to fully inspect their products. Many look similar on the surface, but it’s underneath that truly counts.
- Be sure the company you choose offers the additives to prepare the concrete for the freeze/thaw process, if you live in an area with fluctuating temperatures.
- Consider other uses for this edging. For example, you can edge your driveway, use it to direct water runoff, as a fence border, and more.
- If you don’t have an existing flower bed to edge, Kwik Kerb can create it for you. They’ll do the hard work, so all you have to do is plant, mulch and enjoy!
If you’re tired of fixing your garden edging every summer, or, like me, frustrated at the grasses and weeds that creep into your gardens because there isn’t an effective barrier, then consider Kwik Kerb edging. You simply start out every spring ahead of the curve because you’ve already got perfect edging. In fact, there’s really no downside to Kwik Kerb edging, and your home’s permanent landscaping elements will have you doing double takes every time you step outside.

Hey Chad – Can you come out to Chicago and do this?
