LEED Green Building Products Available for Fences and Decks

Green Building ProductsThanks to advancements in alternative wood products and the use of wood treatments on older wood constructions, your fence and deck options are getting greener.

Richard Lusa, CEO of Fence Depot, Inc., in St. Louis, MO, says more and more of their products are rated as green building products by the LEED criteria.

Some of the most popular products right now are:

Cellular Vinyl Decking vs. Composite Decking

Composite decking is new to the market and has outstanding characteristics, such as wide variety of colors, sizes, and lifetime warranties.  Previously, the composite market drove the industry.  Composite is simple, but it can fade and stain. Plus it’s still made by mixing vinyl with a variety of organic materials that will decay as time goes on.  Thus, the warranties generally range from 10-20 years.

EZ Wood Fencing

EZ Wood treated and stained wood fence is a brand new product that has virtually replaced cedar fencing for Fence Depot, Inc.  This fencing comes with a lifetime warranty against rot and decay and has a pressure stain throughout the wood that lasts a minimum of 2 years before it must be stained again. Or the boards can be left alone to weather to a natural silver gray.  Very little maintenance is required with these products.

100% Vinyl Decking

By choosing 100% vinyl you have a lifetime product that will not fade, rot, decay, or stain.  It is also scratch resistant and is installed with hidden fasteners to make your deck look clean and like new for years to come without staining, excessive maintenance, or eventually replacement.

Lusa says Fence & Deck Depot, Inc. offers a lifetime adjustment warranty on all installed gates.  If your gate needs adjustment due to natural wear, they’ll adjust the gate as needed for as long as you own your home.

Homeowners have so many choices today, Lusa says his team at Fence Depot Inc feels it’s their job to explain what the customer is and isn’t getting with the investment.  “By providing the newest products we are giving our customers the most currant items on the market and allowing them to make the choice to go with items that will truly serve them best.  With our lifestyles and the need for maintenance free items, lifetime warranty products and lifetime gate adjustment warranties just fit.”

“Many customers want to buy the cheapest products, not understanding that they get what they pay for and in some cases have to replace the item in a very short amount of time.  The impact on the industry is that our manufacturers will lighten the product to the point that we replace it and throw it away in too short a time.”

“We install a vinyl post for 6’ tall fence that is ¼” thick. No one in our market will offer this product because they are afraid to up sell the customer to a product they need in order to get the price down. Anyone can sell an item for less but you need to worry about how the contractor can get the price down. In most cases its sacrifice of quality products or how it is installed.”

Insider Tips On Purchasing Fence and Deck Materials

Richard shares 3 tips to make you a savvy fence and deck shopper:

  1. Home store products may be the cheapest, but they’re rarely the best quality.  They simply do not perform the same as products offered by a professional company. They won’t look as good for long.
  2. Manufacturers are thinning up all the products and raising the price.  A professional company won’t install thinner materials.  That’s why they can stand behind lifetime warranties.
  3. Not all cedar is Western Red Cedar as the marketing states. Incense Cedar is widely used in fencing and is relatively less expensive than Western Red.  You can tell by the smell… rather than rich cedar fragrance, it smells like a #2 pencil.
