Mills Apple Orchard Featured at Fall Builders Home & Remodeling Show

by Ellen Viehmann on September 29, 2009

Is there a human being on the planet who doesn’t love homemade apple pie? Eating apples raw, cooked, chopped, sliced and squeezed fresh picked from the apple orchard has been in our collective shared experience dating back to 6500BC. There are more than 7,500 varieties worldwide and 2,500 grown in all 50 states in the US.

So to pay homage to National Apple Month (and find a reason to eat lots of fresh apple pie and pastries made at the height of the season), the Builders Home & Remodeling Show is bringing the apple orchard to the St. Charles Convention Center.

Mills Apple Farm, a working apple orchard in Marine, IL, is sponsoring the first-ever Mills Apple Festival held inside a convention center. The Mills apple orchards are located about an hour east of St. Charles, MO, on farmland dating to 1818.

What happens at an apple festival?

  • Free samples of apple pie and apple cider
  • The famous Mills bakery will sell “made from scratch” apple pie, apple crisp, cookies and other delicious treats
  • You can purchase 9 varieties of fresh-picked apples from the Mills apple orchards
  • Kids under 12 get a free pumpkin to paint to win prizes and temporary tattoos

The Mills Apple Farm is known for both picked and pick-your-own fresh fruit. (The Mills family has documented that fresh-picked apples taste better when you pick them yourself!)

The apple orchard bears fruit from 15 varieties of apples, which are then sold in the on-site store as cider, cider slush, the Mills famous apple pies, cookies, and other goodies. Sugar-free apple pie can be special ordered.

The Builders Home & Remodeling Show begins Friday, Oct. 9, and ends Sunday, Oct. 11. Admission is free and so is parking. Besides the Mills Apple Festival, visitors will be able to browse 300 home, garden and lifestyle exhibitors representing 200 companies.
