If you can’t get enough of yummy apple recipes this time of year, then try these recipes from the third-place winners at the St. Charles Builders Home & Remodeling Show. Judges included Mills Apple Farm who selected Carol Licare from Dardenne Prarie, MO, won for her famous Zesty Apple Pie, and Elizabeth Crowley from St. Louis, MO, won for her Apple Bars.
Zesty Apple Pie – Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 medium Jonathan or Granny Smith apples
- 1/4 cup golden raisins
- 3 tablespoons of tapioca
- 3 pats butter
- pinch of nutmeg
- pinch of salt
- pinch of cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350°. Slice apples fine. Mix all ingredients well. Put pie filling into a 9″ pie pan
with Shop N Save crust. Top with another crust. Flute edges of crust. Make slits in top crust and
sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake for one hour or until golden brown.
Apple Bars – Apple Dessert Recipe:
Combine and sift:
- 3 cups of flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon cloves
Cream:
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 eggs
Add dry mixture.
Gradually add:
- 2 cups grated apples
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup butterscotch chips
Pour into greased, floured 9″x13″ pan. Bake at 375° 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Frost while warm.
Frosting
Whisk until smooth:
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
