The last few weeks of summer are upon us, and it’s time to combat pond scum and get your pond ready for fall.
Here are a few tips to make that late summer/early fall care for water treatments a little easier.
To keep water quality healthy, hand remove dead, dying and unwanted pond weeds from your water feature. This includes string algae, dying lily pads, and yellowing water hyacinths.
Pond Algae
Keep dying leaves of aquatic plants trimmed back so they don’t add nutrients to the water. Decaying organic materials become nutrients in the water that feeds more string algae or green water and/or contributes to the “muck” layer in the bottom of the water feature which is also unhealthy.
For ponds, keep adding Biological Clarifier weekly until the water temperature falls below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Biological Clarifier is the beneficial bacteria Cool Ponds recommends most. Not only does it combat green water, but is also contains bacteria strains that defend against the “muck” layer or sludge. (Once the water temperature drops between 50 degrees Fahrenheit, you will want to switch to a cold water bacteria. More on that next month!)
Pond Weeds
Due to the crazy summer heat this year, your pond may be suffering from an extreme case of string algae. Get rid of it before fall with Clarity Max. Last year we started using Clarity Max with great results. We’ve also had positive feedback from customers who have switched to Clarity Max. When you start to see a little string algae form in your pond, sprinkle in a dose of Clarity Max and it’s gone…for a long while too!
Important: Before using Clarity Max, remove as much of the long strands by hand first. As mentioned above, the less decaying material in the pond the better.
Cool Ponds We were also fortunate enough to have a garden exhibit in the Indiana Flower and Patio show each year since 2005. In 2010 we were chosen to build the feature stream that ran 150 feet at the Indiana Flower and Patio show. We also build a permanent pond at the 2010 Decorator’s Show House.
