So you got your property tax assessment in the mail, and it seems way too high. Especially with the plummeting home values. What do you do?
First, check what your tax assessment should be.
LowerMyAssessment.com is a website that checks your home property’s true value against the tax assessor’s. It’s quick, easy and free.
If your home is assessed too high, you have a narrow window in which to appeal the assessment.
In California, that property tax appeal window is quickly closing for many counties, so if you live in Northern California, especially, you need to act fast.
Once you determine you’re giving too much money to the government, you must fill out the tax appeal paperwork or have someone do it for you. For me, I would rather pay the small fee and have it done accurately by professionals.
