Shopping for the Best Window Replacement Companies

The right window replacement company gives your home eye-catching curb appeal.

One of today’s most popular home improvement projects is energy efficient window replacement. Today’s new replacement windows are better insulated and longer lasting than ever before.

Of course, installing a window involves some serious structural issues, so finding dependable, capable window replacement companies is as important as finding the right windows.

Thomas Construction, located near St. Louis, MO, has been replacing windows and doors as well as performing many other home renovations for more than 35 years. Melissa Shellhase shares these tips about what you should look for–and what to avoid–when you shop for the best replacement windows.

Window Replacement Companies have the Right Stuff

If you work with a company that sells windows exclusively, you may be treated to a sales pitch before you are given an estimate. The general contractors, on the other hand, won’t be concerned with selling as much as simply assessing your job. Either of these options could meet your needs, depending on how much information you want and how much time you have.

The important thing is, the vetting process should not be expensive. Most established companies will be happy to listen to your needs as well as discuss your options– including a few you may not have known about. “Homeowners should not be afraid to take advantage of free estimates because they may learn their dream project is within reach financially,” says Melissa. Free estimates are a given in the home improvement industry, so avoid working with contractors who won’t give them.

The good news is, once you find the right company, you have a much better chance of getting the right window. “Homeowners may not know that the best quality building products are often tied exclusively to the largest and best firms,” Melissa said. An established construction company will have access to building materials which are far superior to those you find at a home improvement store. A good company will also be able to recommend the best replacement window for your region based on experience with many installations.

The Best Replacement Window Is One You Actually Want

Once your options have been properly presented, you should take a day or two and decide what your priorities are. You may have found out more about windows than you ever thought to ask. “The evolution of the replacement window is profound!” says Melissa, whose company has developed a well-insulated, mildew resistant window frame that is also sound absorbent. You’ll find windows with varying degrees of insulation, sun blockage and resiliency, accompanied by widely varying prices. Narrowing down the features you want and the price you are willing to pay is an essential part of choosing your window replacement company.

Window Replacement Companies Should be Built to Last

Finding the right company and selecting your favorite window are both important, but you still have one more issue to settle. Where will this company be if and when you need some support? “You should choose a firm large enough to weather the economic ups and downs to protect your investment and warranties,” says Melissa, “Many companies are too small to stay in business during challenging times.”

This advice comes with a caveat; bigger is not always better. “Established” is not synonymous with “bullet proof”. But if a company is well-funded and has a long history in the area, they are probably doing something right.

These steps may seem academic and not at all fun, but they’re critical if you want the job done correctly. When energy-efficient windows have been installed by the right company, the effect on your electric bill and your curb appeal will be well worth it.
